The prize: A week?s villa holiday for two in Catalonia, courtesy of Villa
Centre. The winners will stay for seven nights, on a self-catering basis, at
one of a choice of two-bedroom properties, each of which has a private pool.
The region is unspoilt and typically Spanish and offers many day-tripping
possibilities, from the picturesque harbour towns of Tamariu and Begur to
the bustle of Barcelona and the dramatic landscapes of the Pyrenees. The
prize, which includes return flights to Gerona from Stansted with EasyJet
and car hire, must be taken in May, June, September or October 2006,
excluding school holidays and subject to availability.
As well as villas in Catalonia, Villa Centre?s portfolio covers France,
Italy, Portugal, Cyprus and the rest of Spain. All properties featured have
their own pools. To view details and book online, visit www.villacentre.com.

It is a crisp winter morning, the view as sharp as a fine steel blade. Oh,
to have time to walk this spit ? reaching vainly, like the fingertips of an
outstretched hand, for an island. Set robustly on its southeastern tip, a
castle, custodian of a narrow strip of water. It was built by a king
(brother of Arthur). Sadly, if I am to complete my itinerary, the walk must
wait.

So I drive off northeast, entering somewhere once imaginatively described as
?an area of national significance?. Crossing a river, I find a Cistercian
abbey, now a parish church, founded by a second king (son of Henry). Here,
in 1471, a queen found refuge after a battle fought many miles to the
northeast. Much later, the locality served as a training area for a
secretive organisation, its mission: ?Set Europe ablaze.?

Consulting my map, I plot my onward course. Five miles east are a second
spit and castle. They, too, must wait for another day, though my next stop
is only 8½ crow miles distant, and in pretty much the same direction. The
car journey, however, is further. As I motor north, then eventually
southeast, the landscape becomes more urban, the sun picking out the harsh,
angular faces of the buildings. Then, the townscape behind me, I reach a
village and a second abbey, where the aforementioned queen was married. Some
say a playwright not only premiered several plays here, but also wrote many
sonnets. (?Alas! ?Tis true I have gone here and there,/And made myself a
motley to the view.? Could be me.) Finally, I continue southeast and pass a
ship. Well, it was. (I think.) Its life started in 1917; it was renamed HMS
Ariel in 1959 and reverted to its original name in 1965. A little beyond, I
halt near the water?s edge and open my flask of chunky vegetable soup. A
third spit, two miles east-northeast, was, until 1998, home of another ?sort
of? ship, principal base of the RNSMS. But it is the prospect of an
incandescent sunset that brings me here. As I patiently wait, I reflect on
my day: spits, ships, castles and abbeys. Quite a tongue-twister when served
with vegetable soup.

The questions

1 What is the name of the island?
2 What was the name of the second ship? HMS Dolphin?
