This happened to me quite a few years ago now. I won a holiday which the
competition paperwork said was worth X. When I checked the brochure price
it was much less than that.
I contacted the promoter, was very pleasant on the phone - had a mistake
been made etc. They were fantastic and sent me a cheque for the difference
(£700) which went towards the spending money.
Definitely worth trying the promoter/prize giver.
If fobbed off, I'd try your local paper. Ours has a good section that
challenges any injustices and, from what I've seen, usually do quite well.
Good luck.

If you are unhappy about this, it is worth expressing that to the companies
involved - after all they are trying to promote their business, and an
unhappy customer isn't good business!
If you are unhappy with their response, refer the matter to the ASA. They
will look into it and, although there will most likely only be some kind of
warning, this will help to keep competition organisers on their toes!
I agree that receiving a prize that is apparently less than you were lead to
expect is frustrating and takes the edge off the pleasure of winning.
I once had a WTC to say that I had won "A load of Oscar winning film DVDs!"
As there are over 80 Oscar winning films on DVD I had visions of needing to
build an extension on the house.
What eventually arrived was 10 DVDs.
10 DVDs is quite a lot and I was very happy to get them, but I would hardly
call 10, a "load."
I wrote to the MD of the company thanking him for the prize, but explaining
that, if I had been told that I had won 10 DVDs I would have been very happy
and not at all disappointed. Naturally I did not receive a reply. But maybe
they'll be a little more careful next time?

If you win a competition and they say the prize is worth over £1000 but when
you receive the items it is worth less than half this amount, is this a
violation of the advertising ?
I received my prize win today and the invoice states the total cost as just
over £400.
TIA
