Well done. Keep digging. You'll note that the description of the properties of the stone is decidedly similar to the description of Portland Stone and Bath Stone. The description of it being easier to work while it's still underground is common.
When I was researching Box, I was told it's a chemical reaction - that these oolitic limestones harden significantly in the air above ground. I'm not sure if it's the absence of groundwater, increased levels of oxygen (circulating around the stone surfaces) or what. I couldn't find an equation.
Do you know if this is true and, if so, can you point me to the chemistry please?
