The Descent: cave location

OK so I'm a sad man. However, to update this topic which was posted
earlier I thought you'd be interested to know about the location for
the cave in the film. The entrance is a large round piece of blue/green
superimposition cloth laying on the ground 2' below the tree trunk into
which the actresses had to pretend to abseil (location - somewhere near
London). The chasm is actually a 16' model with the abseilers digitally
superimposed. The entire cave and all its chambers are constructed from
wood and polystyrene with additional builders sand, gravel (real) and
also occasionally coated with gel to make the walls look wet. The
"sump" is a bath tub and the main bone chamber is a five inch deep pool
with cave props (all cavers would have realised the formations were
"wrong" anyway).
According to Neil Marshall (who made it) "we didn't use any real caves
at all". The above details come from watching the film with the crew
commentary explaining it all - also the CD comes with a documentary
showing much of the "secret" behind the making of the film. However,
one glimmer of light - at least the actresses went REAL caving before
making this film (in Derbyshire). Also, the mystery of why there's a
drill which doesn't get used for the tyrolean traverse is solved - they
used it to drill holes for anchor placement for the tyrolean on both
sides of the chasm but the final sequence was 15 minutes long and so
was heavily edited, leaving the drilling section out but not
re-shooting the bit with the drill in view when the heroic leader makes
her way across the chasm using climbing techniques. Neil Marshall is
respectful of cavers saying something along the lines of (they would)
"make the squeezes in the film look easy".
Come to think of it, although at first I thought it was dross, I'm
getting to like it...
