I agree with you that the closed loop (pressurised) mode is rather unstable,
particularly as the water screw is so frictionless and easily turns itself
fully on.
I've also noticed the problem with the small hole in the water filler
getting clogged with mud - actually it's a good thing that the hole is small
so that the water doesn't all run out in flat-out crawls (like with the
Ariane, for example). If the hole does get blocked, I usually just slacken
off the filler screw so that air can get in around the thread.
