Yes, and?Its one of the best companies I worked for in the last 15 years.
That just means he's even more of a tight-walleted cunt than I am....
If the job requires people to shift big bits of computer equipment
around regularly, then the company should provide appropriate
transport to do the job.
It's his choice to stick a server on the passenger seat of his Aston,
but you have every right to demand he supplies a suitable vehicle.
If he refuses, then it's time to seriously consider if it's a company
worth working for.
He doesn't expect staff to install their own pirate software.
If something is lost/damaged it is replaced as needed.
He actually bothers with compulsory sight tests and pays for full eye
tests, rather than basic industrial check.
He has followed the legal requirements for trained firstaiders,
firemarshals, accident books and workplace first aid kits.
Things like mice and keyboards are replaced regularly to make working as
comfortable as possible. Monitors and graphics are purchased to make
that we can work at comfortable resolutions, along with ergonomic
chairs.
You might think these are pretty basic things, but rarely complied with
in IT industries.
Sales and admin always got the best new kit because customers might see
them, techies and developers scavenged what they could from the left
over crap.
My last job was the worse, even though I was there for 5 years.
I was given a p3 750 when I joined, that failed after 6 months, instead
of getting me a new pc, they dragged out an old p2 450. That lasted 2
years before something failed again, processor died when the HSF died.
So they swapped the cpu for a P2 350. My monitor which I had for the
whole period was a mid 90's 17" Illyama Vision master. Decent when new,
but at nearly 10 years old went pink regularly, went out of focus and
blurry. When I requested a new monitor I was told I would need to wait
until the end of the year to see if there was a budget surplus, or for
someone to leave and scavenge their equally old one.
The accounts admin assistant who occasionally had to open two
applications at once had a 21" TFT.
That is how things are in the internet business, especially those lead
by sales rather than development.
Where I am now, I have two 17" TFTs, because I need to monitor servers
as well as develop and run the office IT/admin. The more focussed
developers and designers get two 21" or one 24" widescreen and one 19"
tft.
And the atmosphere isn't one of not daring to ask for kit.
On Friday, we are going out for a meal. Just because we haven't been out
for one since someone left in August. Company pays for food, we pay for
ale.
While our office isn't in a rough area, it doesn't have any secure
parking, so a company vehicle could easily become a financial liability.
