I like KAs and I've stated that countless times on here.

It's a Ford... of course you do.

I do indeed, in fact I've just bought myself a Scorpio Ultima 24v to run
about in. Because it was cheap and I fancied a big barge for a while.

You don't happen to be a displaced Essex boy, do you? ;-)

What group insurance is a S500?

I don't care. It would cost me the same to insure as a Ka, I'm a
motor trader.

Is Doki.. .or anyone else considering buying one who happens to be
reading this?

Might not be a consideration for you (and I do hope you keep your
insurers up to date with exactly what in your fleet is yours rather
than something you're trying to punt on, as they were cracking down on
this a while back), but it is for the mere mortals out there
considering the running costs of any behemoth they're considering
buying.

Ah, I said "If *I* was to buy something *I* would probably buy an S500. I'm
still on the look-out for one"

If, god forbid, you ever have to visit somewhere in Central London
in one, are you happy to have to shell out £25 congestion charge,
which I believe one of those of the vintage you're likely to end up
with, will be subject to in the near future?

I avoid London, but I do travel there occasionally when it's
unavoidable.

*phew*

<Reconsiders whether he needs to get some locking wheel nuts for the
car...> ;-)

Probably, I believe there are lots of Nigerian Pimps down south.

If that means paying around £50 a year I'm happy to do so. London is
one of those places where a diesel would be truly unsufferable.
Sitting in traffic for hours while they all rush about like headless
chickens.

'They' (whoever they are), will still be rushing around near you,
whatever you're in.

As for spending time in London traffic in a diesel being 'truly
unsufferable'... lol - any idea how up your own arse that makes you
sound?

Yup.

Nah, I'd rather sit in an S500 in silence than some nasty diesel
powered thing

And there we have it ladies and gentleman... an effective admission
that the last diesel Sir spent any real time in was something like a
Montego TD. ;-)

I've just come back from Teignmouth in Devon right now. I did the trip there
in an Audi A6 2.5 TDi Quattro saloon I've just sold, and returned in a
Mercedes ML270CDi I bought there. I've just sold that as well. The Scorpio
was at the trader who bought the ML's house, so I bought that to get home
in.

LPG converted vehicles (rather than those registered as LPG powered
from new), don't get automatic congestion charge exemption,
either... and unless I'm mistaken, the S Class isn't on the
designated register of vehicles eligible for exemption from paying
the CC if converted to LPG.

I live in the civilised North. We don't have the congestion charge.

...yet.

But road pricing is something this pesky Government keeps releasing
soundbites about in the media - it's not going away, and it's 'coming
to a road near you... soon', by my reckoning.

I bloody hope not.

By the time we do I'll be living in another country.

Actually, an manky old S-Class will probably be ideal - most of the ex
Eastern Bloc types I know / have met, absolutely love shagged out old
German motors.

Heh. My girlfriend, who's Czech, has a thing for Citroen XMs. This is quite
worrying.

<SNIP>

How much does it cost to get the rear window sorted out when they go
all misty, (because they all do in the end on these, something
supposedly a pinnacle of quality going by what you've said about
them), if it hasn't been 'broken by thieves... innit bruv' and you
then claim on your insurance to get it done, as is the pikey way of
getting something like that sorted on the cheap?

Depends if you buy a double glazed one. Not all S500s have double
glazing.

Most of the cheap S-Classes I've seen that are in the low rent sector
price wise, seem to be suffering from it - must have been a very
popular option, methinks.

I've never seen an S600 without, but I've seen quite a few S500s that didn't
have double glazing.

It was an option. I wouldn't claim on my insurance for one, I'd go
to a Mercedes breakers and buy another if it worried me that much.

Even if I could justify (1) owning something so over the top and
unnecessary, I personally don't, having owned various lesser, (but
still worthy), executive cars, see why anyone would have one in old
age - if you can afford to run one when they're still worth a wank,
then fair enough... owning one in the twilight of its life because
it's all you can afford is pure financial folly and a clear 'look at
me and my inadequate penis (3)' statement... in my opinion, of
course.

Or alternatively it's Bangernomics at its best. Buy an old quality
motor,
run it for 10k miles, sell it. Even if it dies it's cheap enough to
not be a worry.

(1) I mean, can anyone justify owning something like an old S Class
once they've spent a few years in the wilderness having long since
fallen off the company director funded gravy train, when something
smaller will do the job just as well, costing less to run, whilst
not having the unfortunate side effect of making you look like a
bit of a low rent pikey / wannabee Efrican pimp? (2)

I flike large cars. I like large engines. I like bargains. People
who judge me because I drive a car they couldn't afford to run just
make me laugh.

Oh dear... that last sentence speaks volumes about you and your
perception of how owning a shagged out old S-Class will seemingly
elevate you above the rest of the whippet totting classes, with the
bonus that it's reinforced everything I've ever thought about those
who bother running something like along those lines.

Excellent :-)

Personally, I could afford to run something like that if I wanted to.

Good, that's nice to hear.

I choose not to for the various reasons already stated elsewhere in
this thread.

Your choice.
