My virtual PC is infected with all sorts of ***, despite rarely
being
used.

Dans experience is not unusual.
I too have never had a virus using XP daily for over 2 years.

So I gather - but how much maintenance does it take to keep a WinXP
box
that way?

Next to *** all. Install OS, turn on firewall, patch up, stick
Firefox and Thunderbird on, install half decent AV and use common
sense.

Yeah, I did that to my 2 XP PCs, apart from the firewall and AV bit. I
havent had any problems so far.

I think common sense is the most important part of your equation.

So basically - "Macs - the PCs for the stupid" ;-)

Maybe. I see advantages and disadvantages for both. Unfortunately the
smug-factor doesn't help the Mac's case.

But I still want a Mac Mini.

The Intel ones may be better but the old G4 ones are really underpowered,
I use one as a media centre running a plasma.

Power is kinda academic for what I want it for, really.

But I do want something quiet. :)
