How about the need to use iTunes, and the search for third-party software, much of which is shareware or commercial, to deal with basic
tasks such as copying music. Would people put up with that for a digital camera? No recording. No radio.
Radio headphones option. Recording was definitely optional.
So they're not included then. Apple and options remind me of BMW and
options.
It's a fucking portable audio player. There's no need to supply
everything with it, when 99% of consumers want it as a cassette walkman
replacement.
And at £269 for the 60Gb model - inc VAT - from Amazon and other places, it's a bloody good deal for possibly the most polished solution. I don't personally want a radio, even though I think it is a feature which should be included if possible; I don't need recording (my iPaq does it and has 9Gb of storage chucked in it)...
What I do like is proper car integration. I've yet to see a 'control your iRiver/Archos from your steering wheel/radio' solution - something which exists for many cars.
iTunes is good software, I don't see the need to use other software. In what context do you mean 'copying music' - loading the player, or copying
from the player?
Both.
The only area you can really say the iPod / iTunes combi falls down on
is the lack of ability to copy back from the player without downloading
a 3rd party solution.
Yeah. This has to be the daftest feasible response.
iTunes wasn't a problem, it just lacked functionality and had an exorbitantly large system footprint. I am familiar with google but I
have no idea how to interpret those graphs and I certainly don't know
how it makes the iPod any better than an iRiver for music playback.
I'm now desperately trying to think of how much more functionality you
need. iTunes does everything I can think of - rips, uploads, downloads
from the 'net, shares music on my network etc. What exactly is missing?
(other than Ogg Vorbis support, which most people don't give a toss
about anyway)
It also converts videos for use on the iPod video model, streams to multiple Airport express base stations, is scriptable, handles radio streaming, converts formats...
It's not like anyone is forcing people to buy iPods. There is a reason why it is the best selling device, and that is the fact that it is simply the best all-round solution for the market. Archos had machines which did more, but the interface was so awful, the battery life so terrible, and the whole package so inferior overall, that the extra functionality was wasted.
Never mind Apple users being fanatical - I will never understand the negativity that non-Apple users have towards Apple products, and the desperation to see flaws that simply aren't there.
