Thanks to all for answers. The problem is not actually the Connector on the
car, somewhere down the line someone has plonked and ISO adaptor on. The
problem is that the JVC head unit has a different plug configuration (2sets
of 8 pins instead of 4 sets of 4) and I forgot to take off the JVC specific
adaptor when I sold the car (spazzer!!!).

Anyhoo the nice guy in Halfords reckons they can get an ISO-to-JVC 16-pin
from JVC so should be all OK. (I'll keep an eye on the presets issue
though - thanks for that little gem)
