Well personally I'd have gone, as a ban's almost inevitable, and you might
as well get it over with - sooner you're banned, the sooner you're back on
the road. You should be able to get legal help from the duty solicitor (all
under legal aid), or arrange your own one who should be able to sort out
legal aid, and if you turn up in person (which, ok, you will do anyway), you
get the opportunity to wear a cheap suit that'll make them pity you, and you
get play the silly bugger and just say things like "there's no excuse, it
was a stupid thing to do", blah blah blah.

If they think you're a flash *** by driving something like an MR2 Turbo
(which they may do), it might go down well to admit that in hindsight that
spending that money on the MR2 was a stupid thing to do, as you've got very
little in the way of savings to put towards a house deposit, and you wish
you'd been more prudent with your money, etc etc, hence now getting a ***
old diesel to drive around in. IMHO all this babble will make them realise
that you've matured and changed your attitude with regards to money and fast
cars for good and won't drive like that again.

Also, you say about buying yourself time to sort yourself out??? Well,
surely you've been planning how you're going to get to and from work without
a license since you got caught, no? You've known about this date a
reasonable amount of time to be able to pick up bus/train timetables, or get
a push-bike, or possibly find someone at work who could either give you a
lift to work, or a few people within 15 minutes' cycle ride that you could
get to in the morning and grab a lift with.

Is your license *absolutely* crucial to your job, or does it just make it a
*lot* easier to get there? If it's just the latter, then there are ways and
means.
