like they were saying :
'90 Mk2 Astra GTE 16v - 163g/km
'07 Mk5 Astra SRi 1.9CDTi - 157g/km
Not really a fair comparison, since the MK2 and MK5 Astras would have
been in different classes had they existed concurrently.
'76 Mk1 Fiesta 1.0 - 149g/km
'07 Mk5 Fiesta 1.25 - 142g/km
That's really impressive, though; the 07 Fiesta is a much larger,
safer, quicker, better equipped, cleaner and more comfortable car
Umm, isn't the point rather that that the entire market has grown and
larded up, therefore they ARE direct replacements and thus comparable?
The size classes have slipped, and the manufacturers have inserted smaller cars below them. So, if you want to buy a MKII Astra sized car, you still can, it's just that it's badged "Corsa". You can still buy a sub-800kg supermini if you want one. You can buy the base spec 790kg Peugeot 107 which is 20cm shorter than a MK1 Fiesta but is much better packaged so no more cramped. It's also about 5 seconds quicker to 60 and emits 27% less CO2 and is much less likely to kill you if you crash it.
Alternatively, you can buy a contemporary Astra and get an upgrade to the class above without an increase in emissions. It's not as if the increase in weight is because they've been wastefully building the floorpans out of lead, it's a direct result of the cars being safer, more spacious and more comfortable.
