Hi, this is my first post here and I'm not sure I'm in the right place.
A friend suggested I access newsgrouops to ask for advice about a few
problems I have been having with my 3 1/2 year old Peugeot 206 1.6 HDi
(3 door).
I only passed my test in December 2004. This is my very first car. I
bought a low mileage - 11,500 miles - when I bought it at 2 years old
with another years warranty to run. I chose the same model that I'd
learned to drive in. I'm an essential car user at work and needed a
reliable car. I have owned this car for about 18 months, the warranty
expired last November. It has not been a good experience and the tow
truck man and I have gotten to know each other well.
Problem 1 - the speedo
While it was under warranty I had several problems with the speedo
which occasionally just stopped working. The first time this happenend
I'd driven less than 200 miles, it happenend a couple of time and
corrected itself then it failed completely. I took the car to the
garage who looked at it and said there was no problem. I drove the
car to the supermarket with my son and we were towed home as the speedo
wasn;'t working. They had my car for 2 weeks while they ordered the
part from France. It happenend again a couple of months later, while
still under warranty, replaced again under warranty.
Then it happenend again in April. I was towed to the garage. They
could not find a problem after rummaging in its electrical innards for
a while. I suggested that one of the mechanics took it home. Still no
problem. They used it as a delivery vehicle for a day. No problem.
They allegedly spent longer than 2 hours working on it but only charged
me for one. the whole experience cost me about £100 when you take in to
account the fule they used.
I complained as this had been a problem while th car was under
warranty. If they'd found a problem they said they would have done it
for free, they didn't so they charged me. Like I enjoy having my car
off the roads.
Problem 2 - the indicator
It keeps cancelling itself when I indicate left (never right, only
left). This has been replaced 5 tmes so far. When the car was MOTed
whilst still under warranty this was a problem again. It was replaced
a while after after the warranty expired as the dealer didn't contact
me to let me know when the part was in, but under the terms of the
warranty so I wasn't charged.
The indicator has gone yet again. Again while turning left. Except
over the last few days in the hot weather I have had to hold the
indicator in place while I have indicated left as the problem is so
much worse in the heat.
This is being dealt with on Wednesday under the warranty, mostly
because of the complaint I made about problem number 3.
Problem number 3 - the drivers seat.
The ratchet mechanism broke and the seat was replaced last year on 29
July. The same seat broke again - again the ratchet mechanism broke -
in the middle of May. I was towed to the garage yet again.
Except this time I made the mistake of being towed to a different
garage, I'd decided that I couldnt afford the main dealer prices (I
know, I know, big mistake). This cost £477.36 to replace (part and
labour). My car is now on to its third drivers seat frame. I would
have expected that a car seat last the life of the car - I had driven
less than 10,000 miles in teh onje that was replaced while still under
warranty. I still have the seat frame that was replaced.
After a few weeks of feeling resentful (and as I still had the car
seat) I made a complaint to the manufacturer and the main dealer I
bought the car from (it had been a hire care before I owned it). They
said that they were not responsible because 1) it was out of warranty
and 2) I'd taken the car elsewhere. They did say that if I'd taken it
to them they would have fitted the new seat for free. However, they
have offered to replace the faulty indicator thingy (sorry, I lack
technical terms) for free.
I took it to a small independent garage that was recommended by several
people. I'd hoped that they would be able to repair the problem, but
the ratchet was a sealed unit and the whole thing had to be replaced.
I rang the main dealer and they gave me a price of over £600 to do the
same thing, so I stuck with the independent garage. Perhaps not the
best decision I've made here.
Problem number 4 - the passenger seat
Last night, as a friend got out of the back of the car and used teh
mechanism to bent the front seat forwards to get out the ratchet
mechanism broke on the front passenger seat. The seat could not be
secured in to the right position. My passenger seat is now only fixed
securely in maximum reclining position, in any other position it moves
backwards and forwards.
This will be the 2nd seat fram in the passenger positon.
I would really appreciate any advice on the problems I have had with my
car. It just seems to be a bottomless pit for money. The novelty of
being towed has worn off, even for my son who was fascinated by the
process and it is creating havoc with my life.
Have I posted in the right place?
Has anyone had similar problems with a 206?
Is there anything I can do? I still have the last seat that was
replaced.
I'd flog it. Doubt you'll make them take it back. FWIW, I've driven a lot of
old shitters in the past couple of years, and never had anywhere near as
much trouble. Although the time a fuel line pissed petrol all over the
engine bay was a bit worrying ;).
