I get mid 40's mpg on a 1L and thats thrashing it.
My insurance (in my 30s) is £125 FC with NO NCB
I suspect the exhaust is cheaper too.
So everything is cheaper, even by your underestimation.
Multiply that by many years of ownership and I'm quids in.
There wouldn't be much of a market for small cars if they cost the same to
run as big ones. I rest my case :-)
