Re: VIC, repair on not?

Damn.

It's not VOSA or DVLA that your ire should be aimed
at, but the insurance company who pitched it as Cat C.

<g> Ok, so do you have any idea how they differentiate between the two
please (as that sounds like that would have saved us some effort).

As for Cat C being "minor damage" - if it'd been B, you wouldn't legally
be allowed to keep it - the shell would _have_ to be crushed by a
licenced disposal outfit.

No problem with that. I was just going by the observation that this is
(or at least 'looks like') the sort of damage you could do with a size
10 boot.

And why did the lady I talked to at VOSA suggest that "they normally
like to see the repair completed" if it was irrelevant (and hence my
question).

Has the lady at VOSA you spoke to seen the vehicle - or even a photo...?
Somebody saying "a bit of damage to the wing" down the phone could be a
small dink, or it could be the suspension hanging off.

I suppose (based on some of the nobs you meet when selling / buying
cars etc). I believe my description was accurate though.

If somebody takes a battered heap in for the VIC, and it passes, they may
yet get it back to base, start working on it, and find it's worse than
they thought. Hiho. At least they can ring with impunity now, since it's
already been checked...

I get the reason for all of this (and am all for it) but as we all
know these things often simply get in the way of ordinary / sensible
people, without always actually protecting us from those you know how
to get round the system. I was just trying to get an idea of what is
mandatory, sensible and trying to avoid the 'why did you bother to do
that then' situations ... (luckily, not being in this position since
well before it all got more complicated).

[1] The form asks if we know the vehicles history. What is the point of
that? As it happens it's been in our family since new (that they could
find in seconds if they cared to look) and this is it's second minor
prang, but why ask NOW about it's history?

If the VIC spots that it IS a ringer, you've just talked yourself out of
any "Umm, it must have already been like that - I never checked" excuse.

Talks 'one' you mean, understood (The family have had this car from
new).

You're taking it all too personally. The regs aren't designed to cope
with somebody trying to keep hold of some £50 banger which has been
written off for a slight dink.

Ok, then it makes a bit more sense, thanks.

Just look at most of the Cat C stuff on
the salvage auction sites.

For example...

Ouch.

(Gotta admit, £240 for something as completely and utterly mediocre and
unloved as a Vx Belmont sounds a chunk higher than it's pre-crash value.
You've done well...)

<g>.

Well, maybe (in the big outside world), but as I've mentioned, it's
been reliable and efficient transport since my Dad bought it new in
92/3. The Mrs likes it especially because of the HUGE boot, power
steering and reasonable / compact size. I like it because it's pretty
anonymous looking so doesn't seem to attract any unwanted attention
(car's all around it have been keyed, this was left alone). It seems
fairly easy to work on and spares are fairly easy to find in spite of
it's age. It came to us cheap, taxed, FSH (and general history), a new
set of tyres and new front disks / pads (as I'd fitted them for our
niece previously). It's reasonably quiet (certainly more so than my
218SR and this newer KA of the daughters (road noise or what)). It's
reasonably economical. It has 4 doors (something we have been reminded
is so much easier since having the Ka).

Old banger to some, good economical and tidy runner to us (and still
is) ;-)
