Manual Gearbox, Clutch or Driveshaft problem - Advice PLz - Vauxhall
Astra 1.6I 2000
Drove up to a junction, and just about to drive off. Then a dull thud,
and the engine kept running, but no drive?? Had to push it home.
1 - gear lever seems to be OK as it moves the selector shaft in and
out of the gbox, and it seems to be firm with no sloppyness.
2 - Clutch pedal seems to be OK, as there seems to be pressure ?
3 - Engine runs perfectly with no rattles etc.
With clutch in or out, you can move the gear lever, but no gears can
be selected. Only my assumption as there is no crash of gears.
Strange thing is that at normal tickover the speedo shows 10mph (magic
I must be in some sort of time warp, as the car does not move)
When I rev up the car the speedo goes over 30mph.
If I declutch the speedo drops to 0mph, but as soon as I release the
clutch the speedo raises to 10mph.
I am not sure where the speedo picks up its signal, but I hace no ABS,
so I assume its off the final drive.
I have raised each wheel in turn, off the ground and in a gear?? and
the wheels rotate freely, with no friction.
Any ideas. As I am on a very tight budget.
Sounds like you've lost a driveshaft spline or joint. With the handbrake on & it idling in 5th see if either of the driveshafts is turning (don't look with your fingers).
