if they were corroded why were they not picked up in the first
place?

Because they may not have been actually *quite* bad enough to fail,
but leaving them in place whilst replacing the one which WAS would be
short- term foolhardiness.

Given that this is a Focus, it's not exactly a borderline
scrap/repair case. What would you *really* say? "No, leave the merely
manky pipes, and just replace the one that's *completely* fucked,
then strip all the same stuff down again next year"?

Where do you draw the line - its either pass of fail !!!

Yes, and no. The fail is "In the tester's opinion".

if there was 2.0 mm on the tyres should they be replaced because they
would fail before the next MOT?

They should certainly be replaced before the next MOT, yes.

I'll bet you'd bitch if the pipes failed in 10 months time.

Its not what I asked, where is the line - things that are a failure or
things that will fail - everything will fail EVENTUALLY so where is the
cut off period?? and my biggest point I should have been informed!!
I dont like people making decisions for me without me being informed
especially when it means extracting money from me. How were all the
rear pipes missed! I saw the bloody things and they were fine, he even
pointed out the ONE that needed replacement, sounds as if there are a
few MOT testers answering here and its common practice !!! a good way
to bump up the cash since the VOSA people limit an MOT an hour per bay
whereas they used to put three through an hour!!

im a mechanic & an mot inspector as well, its not common practice to
replace
items that haven't failed, not in my garage anyway !!! what is common
practice is to inform the customer of any additional work that needs
doing.
you seem to have been mis-informed here as well, vosa don't limit the
mot's
per hour nor have they
ever, I can do 2 in an hour if they are fairly new cars or I can do 1
in an
hour it does really depend on the vehicle.

ive passed cars in the past, only to get them in the service bay to
find the
brake pads need replacing as I couldn't see the friction material
through
the wheels enough to make a decision, so we've always been told on
things
like this to pass & advise.

trying to post earlier to this thread but nntp.aioe.org is playing up
!!!!! so ive had to go through google groups, pain in the arse !!!!
