<snip interesting and useful to some warning>

... Take along a damp test meter - Aldi had some digital ones
recently for £10 - they just need the probes modifying to make them a
little finer at the tip.

How do you do that? Won't such modifying affect the reading in some
way?

Mary

They simply measure the resistance or conductivity of the material they
are probing. A smaller contact area due to smaller diameter probes will
of course affect the reading, but it is only a matter of seeing if any
change in the reading is obtained on pushing the probes in - which would
indicate conduction and thus damp.

Yes but do you file it down or what?

Mary

Any way that will turn the blunt and wide probes into fine narrow ones
will work. One way would be to solder a pair of pins (or needles) onto
sockets which would be a tight fit over the existing probes. Another way
would be to simply bind some needles very tightly to the side of the
existing probes. So long as they are fine enough to poke through the
surface lining into the wood without leaving too much of a mark, that is
all that is really needed.

I remember hearing of another moisture probe which had been modified for
caravan damp testing use, though I cannot remember where I read about it.

Thanks, Harry. I doubt that we'll be using one but it's all grist to the
mill :-)

Mary
