How do you do that? Won't such modifying affect the reading in some way?

They simply measure the resistance or conductivity of the material they
are probing. A smaller contact area due to smaller diameter probes will of
course affect the reading, but it is only a matter of seeing if any change
in the reading is obtained on pushing the probes in - which would indicate
conduction and thus damp.
