Occasionally I do press ups between workouts, or sometimes body
weight squats. I find that this relieves tension and sometimes wakes
me up when I am feeling lethargic. Is this like to undermine the
effects of full gym workouts? For example if I do some pressups on
monday then BP in the gym tuesday is that likely to be
counterproductive in termsof benefits I might get from my gym
workout?

Not really, but it would depend on how intensive the pushups were.

Intensive enough to push your bodyweight back up! Actually I did an
experiment with this and IIRC you push something like 60% of your actual
body weight...

If you can only do 4-5 pushup before you reach failure then it would
cause a problem.
If you can do 25-30 then it should be OK.
