Am making a good sized bird table for the coming winter. We have a large
number of magpies, crows and jackdaws which will certainly monopolise the
feeding surface and clear it in no time. Does anyone have experience of
how to ensure the small garden birds can reach food without the bully boys
preventing them? I was thinking of a frame/roof of chicken wire but Senior
Management believes it may look unsightly! Suggestions appreciated. TIA.

The best idea I had was when I was watching 'er indoors, hanging out the
washing. I looked a the plastic washing basket she was carrying and then had
the idea of turning the washing basket upside down and of putting the bird
feed underneath it.
This is the sort of thing,
http://www.hardware-ironmongers.com/details.aspx?code=DE278473 however, mine
is round as opposed to square, available somewhere like Wilko's for about a
fiver. One row of holes was a bit bigger than the rest and the Starlings
soon figured this out, however, this was a simple fix with a bit of wire
reducing the hole size.
I put the basket on the ground with a brick on top and this totally defeated
the Starlings, while all the small birds hopped inside and feasted in peace.
When I first set it up, I chucked a bit of feed around the outside of the
basket, it wasn't long before the small birds learned the food was inside.
