Hello!
I'm in the middle of making some bird boxes and have seen various
designs where there is simply a hole and nothing else for birds to
hold onto at the entrance. My question is:
How do young birds get back into a box after their first flights?
They don't need to. Once they are out they are out permanently.
In nature it's easy for them to get back into a nest because there is
plenty to grip, so, should *ALL* boxes really have at least a stick or
a platform below the entrance hole?
No. It will make it easy for predators to get in.
Baby birds do not go back to their nest. Once they have fledged they are
out into the wide wide world for ever ;-)

OK, thanks everyone, my question is answered!
I'm actually in the middle of re-cladding my house in pvc.
Would have preferred wood but it's more expensive and pvc is zero
maintenance. I think it's actually "greener" to use pvc as it doesn't
need coating in chemicals every few years, like wood would, wouldn't
it!
I had some scraps of pvc cladding left over and it happens to lock
together to make 15cm square hollow section, so I decided to return
some space to the birds I had to turf out from under the eaves and
various cavities.
Yes, I did make holes in the bottom of it and some more for it to
breathe a bit. It'll never get cleaned by me but judging by the
haystack I found in the cavities behind the old cladding, I doubt it's
very crucial.
I remove, clean out, and disinfect my nestbox shortly after fledging to
dispel all the earwigs, snails, and other vermin which accumulate during and
after the nesting season. The nestbox is replaced in position in
November/December to enable prospective tenants to become familiar with it
and then given another quick removal and clean (out of service about1hour)
about mid/end March.
The reason for the second clean being to ensure maximum visibility for a
miniature camera fitted inside the nestbox.
