My German friend mailed me to say she saw a hoopoe in her
village
today, OMG, how jealous am I?

Common as muck over there! What's so special?

The EBCC atlas of European breeding birds shows that Hoooe is
absent from large parts of Germany so 'common as muck' is
incorrect. The fact that Christina's German friend thought it
was noteworthy suggests she comes from a part of Germany where
they don't usually occur .

This is indeed the case, Alan. I will quote a little bit from
her mail:

"It was the very first time I spotted one, they are rare even
here where
we get all sorts of rare birds as you know. I told Maike the
orni as
soon as I got home, and she was delighted to hear it as she had
seen it
just a few days ago from her car while she went home and drove
through
Zadrau, but she only caught a glimpse and felt she wasn't sure
enough
to report it. But now that I saw it, too, she will make a note
of it."

(Maike is the person everyone phones for all things birdie.
She goes ringing all over the world. Maybe the equivalent of
our county recorders, but my German is so dire that I was
unable to establish how their system compares with ours when I
met her.)

Hi,
I have been lucky enough to find 2 in 2 years near to Fife
Ness, maybe the same bird? But still very much a rarity up here
and certainly a mega in some of the countries I have worked in.

A few(?) years ago, after some bird counting, we were having a
drink or 2 in a taverna in the south of Spain when, in strode a
Spanish hunter (?) and started to boast to his mates of the 13
Hoopoe he had shot that day unknown to him one of our companions
was president of SEO and it certainly was an unlucky 13 for the
hunter(?) as the police arrived to remove him to the cells. :-)
