Personally I find the tail dipping habit of Chiffchaffs a more
reliable method of separating silent birds. There are a number
of other features that help and are listed in any decent guide
but it is never simple.
Indeed. Since it's the only time I have ever had a full view of
a Chiffchaff, and I have never had more than a fleeting glimpse
of a WW, I cheerfully admit to being a beginner when it comes to
sorting out Willowchiffs (or Willowchaffs).
The secret is to pay close attention each time you see one. Eventually you
begin to see subtle differences though it is, as Alan said, never simple.
Learn the song of WW from a recording and you'll find lots more than you
have been doing.
