We live in a hill side village in the West Riding of Yorkshire and the
nearest water is at least a couple of miles away and that's a small
beck.

We seem to have been adopted by a pair of Mallards (M/F.

Mallards do weird things - I had a female trying to raise
a brood in a Log flume at an Amusement park I ran.
Also at some point after breeding they must moult
and are flightless for a while, in this period they are
vulnerable and would seek a 'quiet' spot.
