Strange Mallard behaviour

We live in a hill side village in the West Riding of Yorkshire and the
nearest water is at least a couple of miles away and that's a small
beck.
We seem to have been adopted by a pair of Mallards (M/F), they have been
about since Sunday mainly at night when they wander about our garden and
drive plus both next doors.
My wife has seen them on the garage roof so they must have some flight
but nobody has actually seen them fly.
I'm not a bird expert but wondered if this was normal behaviour so
thought I'd ask someone who would know, thanks in advance.
