Pigeons are already laying (they never stop) If they are small white
eggs, then perhaps the birds have picked a particulaly unstable nest
site and eggs keep being lost over the edge?
Crows and gulls tend to break open the eggs with their beaks and eats
straight away, although they may be forced to fly off quickly with
their loot and maybe then drop the eggs accidentally. (I think they can
carry a hen's eggs once they;ve chipped a hole in it that gives them
something to hold on to).
There are a number of possible sources of eggs this time of year. The
most obvious being bored kids. But wild duck are laying already and
also don't forget the nation are becoming increasingly fond of free
range chickens (thank god) perhaps that's the source? I think I'm right
in thinking that occassionally a chicken deserts the nest box in favour
of laying under a hedge? but if a young bird and perhaps not broody she
might abandon the eggs for crows to find? Would i be right Tina? is
there a nearby farm maybe?
