Laying A Trap For Migrating Birds

Goodness gracious, no, not *that* sort of trap! Just getting a bit
bored with electricity and pylons...
I am out at sea (yes, still doing the two-week offshore stint on me
oilrig) and we are coming up to the best time to be out here, the
autumn migration season. Not much about as yet, with the exception of
one particular bird which is a harbinger of things to come...
Today we have our first Kestrel of the autumn. In over twenty years of
working offshore, I don't think there has been an autumn in which one
of these birds hasn't appeared and made the rig its offshore home for
at least a couple of weeks, often longer. Anything that lands on the
rig is easy prey for a Kestrel, as the migrants are usually exhausted
if they are forced onto our deck. This Kestrel is just sitting and
waiting, the trap is laid...
Perhaps it's time to redefine the Kestrel's status as a land (only)
bird?
