presumably there was a significant tailwind. Apparently, in the days of the D.H. Trident, those types used to do marginally supersonic groundspeeds on the London-Rome route with the aid of the prevailing tailwinds.Flew in one of FlyBe's Dash 8 Q400's today and took a Garmin foretrex GPS with me. I switched it on and was surprised to see 480mph !!!! - altitude and distances were perfectly OK, never ever had any problems with speed before, in car, or on other aircraft. I was a bit surprised to see that a prop can do 480mph though, that's got to be a world record ?? no ??. Can this be right ????.
I don't think the GPS was wrong as it had locked onto quite a number of satellites and was showing no other erroneous readings, it showed a steady 480mph !!
