Interesting Programme

There's a new series on the Discovery Wings Satellite channel called
"Flying Heavy Metal".
It is looking at the history of passenger jet aircraft. The first
episode looks at the history of the Boeing 707.
The show is presented by a 747 pilot.
In this episode they let the 747 pilot have a go in a Boeing 707
flight simulator.
They said that the 707 normally required 3000m of runway to land.
Apparently, the problem with the 707 was the swept back wings. The
wing design was very fuel efficient at high speeds, but provided poor
lift at slow speeds. As a result, the 707 pilots had to come in hard
and fast when landing.
In the programme, they wanted to see what would happen if a modern
trained 747 pilot, tried to land the 707 on just 1500m of runway.
Using the simulator, they set up to land at Sandeago, California.
He managed to land and stop just 5 feet from the edge of the river at
the end of the runway. However, he had to fully engage the 707's
emergency braking system to avoid going off the end of the runway.
As a surprise, they then let the 747 pilot fly a Boeing 727 for real
as co-pilot.
The main 727 pilot was so impressed that he let the presenter of the
programme land the 727.
