You don't have to do that with the BNC plugs I recall.
AFAIK PL-259 was designed for RG-8 which has a huge
diameter.
Most BNC connectors come fairly close to mimicking the
construction of RG58, 59, and 6. Of course those
cables don't all have the same impedance, so there
seems like there would have to be some inconsistency
through the connector with at least one of them.
Just fit the appropriate impedance BNC.
I can see how that works, since the various coax have different ODs for
their inner insulator and shiel. For example, I just ordered up a bunch of
compression-style BNCs for quad shield RG-6.
This is also true for F connectors.
Shame it's rarely stamped on them.
By implication, it is in the model designation, which may be stamped on the
part. These connectors are usually designed specifically for whatever coax
they are attached to, e.g., RG 6, 8, 58, 59.
