Yes, I know what the letters stand for. I'm just asking when, and why,
the
term "3-pole" was deemed insufficient and "TRS" was substituted.
TRS tells you what type of three pole you are dealing with. Otherwise
you might show up with a 13 amp mains plug.
It seems to be an Americanism and a fairly recent one if my experience is
anything to go by.
To me,. it's the standard convention which was in use
studios/broadcast long before I joined in the 60s.
Over here they are "jack-plugs". I note that Dave Plowman seems to reserve
the term "TRS" for B-gauge plugs, this really does seem to be an area where
every little portion of the audio and telecoms industries have their own
particular terminology, no wonder there is so much confusion.
As all three types of standard quarter inch plugs
(GPO, TRS and TS) are found commonly in studios,
we need to differentiate between them. Bantam are also
common in patch bays.
