Not even slightly interested in BluRay. The samples I've seen so far
are totally unacceptable to me. The video compression artefacts during
movement are just horrible, and they try desperately to make the
picture look crisper than it really is with edge enhancement. I've
never seen anything so unrealistic in my life.
Since when has digital *anything* ever been realistic? Even digital photography which is totally *unavoidable* these days is a crock compared with good quality/properly processed film and worse, in true 'digital' fashion like bedroom DJs and Music Producers, *everyone* is a bloody 'photographer' now and can dolly up the most hideous cock-ups in clever, near automatic PP software!
Add to that, of course, that you can only display the thing on either
an LCD or plasma display and the horror is complete. Neither comes
even close to CRT for flesh tones (unless you like luminous pink skin,
that is).
We only project movies, so every little helps when it comes to *sharpness* - whether real or (digitally) perceived. Some of the BluRay movies have been outstanding compared with the DVD equivalents - we have newly-remastered Dr No and Blade Runner waiting to go; it will be interesting to see how they compare.
One area where Bluray scores bigly is the (digital) sound quality - I don't know how they go, but some of the 'THD/Uncompressed/HD Master Audio' (??) soundtracks blow the normal (DD5.1?) soundracks into the weeds!
A good example of where BD *trounces* DVD in both picture and sound quality is the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy.
