Amp settings a possibility. The front panel should just have 'L R' lit
up when connected to digital or analogue. You could try connecting the
analogue line out of the laptop to the L and R direct in of the amp -
this would rule out any chance of incorrect settings. I have the same
amp (mk 2 version) used just for stereo and I reckon it's pretty good.
Films (I think) are 'supposed' to have quiet voice tracks - I usually
listen at 10dB higher on the volume readout than music just to pick up
the dialogue.

To be honest I'm not sure anymore. It it does sound lacking in midrange,
but as it's been mentioned, movie dialogue is not the clearest at the
best of times. I don't have much experience with Hi-fi, so possibly I'm
mistaken about the whole thing.
I'm hearing 'more' with the Wharfedale compared to my old plastic dell
speakers - more sound which otherwise goes by unnoticed with the cheaper
speakers. This may be why I'm having trouble bedding in with the new
system - my ears have more to listen to, and dialogue is being lost in
the process. (?)
Anyway, I'll try out some of the advice, double check connections and as
Don said, live with it for a couple months and see how it goes.
Thanks to everyone for the replies.
