The reality for me is that every analogue TV system I've ever watched
showed clear signs of ghosts, noise, etc.

Come on!, there are a lot of people who have good TV reception

I'm afraid I've never seen any reliable figures for what "a lot" or "good"
mean in the above context. I've also often noticed that people have had
poor pictures and seem unaware of this - indeed, assumed it was 'normal'
for the image to have ghosting blurring the image and visible noise.

Given the above I can only report my experience. i.e. That DTTV varies a
lot, but the best images I've seen from it are better than any I've seen
from analogue PAL via a domestic system. I am happy to accept that PAL
delivers superb results at the broadcaster, and for viewers whose setup is
near-ideal. Just never seen it in any home.

Slainte,

This pretty much agrees with my experiences. The only home I've ever known
to have really good analogue reception is a friend who lives within sight of
Crystal Palace and Croydon yet still has a decent antenna (pointing
somewhere between the two). Otherwise, all other pictures, including mine,
have noise and/or ghosting which is absent on DTTV.

Jeez.. Not another one who lives down a hole?..

Swap any noise for the 7 shades of puce for skin tones eh Serge?..

Could you put up a picture of these skin tones. I've looked for these
puce tones on digital TXs and I just don't see them. Maybe your
digital receiver's faulty ; )

There are several opticians advertising in the Yellow pages;)

(on the other hand PAL cross colour is always there!

Good decoders?..

Unfortunately you can't get something for nothing. A decoder designed
to minimise cross colour will compromise performance in some other
way, reducing resolution or introducing motion artifacts probably.

No matter.. the PAL piccy we have can still kick the crap out of the
digi offerings, in fact you can see all the sodding imperfections they
are now doing with the lack of proper cameraman and peeps who know what
their doing at the other end!...

We'll be down to U tube resolution before long!...
