3. Speakers are the only open frontier for the audiophile. So much is
unknown, so much improvement can be made, that speakers are truly
worthy of our energies.
I would put speakers at number two on the list. Number one, which is
probably discussed even less than speakers, because it isn't sexy chat
about kit, is the listening environment. You can do more to improve
sound reproduction with an hour in Ikea than you will achieve by
spending an extra grand on speakers.
But certainly as far as sound reproduction equipment itself goes, yes
speakers are right up there.
My usual phrase is 'speakers have the last word' and, yes, rooms do then
take over and make the sound their own, but one point I would make is
that it is all too easy to 'tune' to the sound of/in a room. I reckon
the only way to 'test' the sound by *listening* (strange, I know) is to
leave the room for long enough to forget it and then walk back in.
Differences and colourations are then very apparent but only for a few
moments before 'accomodation' sets in again..
Blog Update:
1) Shiny Nigel was round last night for the first time in probably about
a year - he loved the TLS80s (pinned him to the wall with some seriously
deep Yello), he was amazed at how the KT917 sounded and how firmly it
*grabbed* the stations, he loved the Lowthers (as usual, but first
hearing of the Fidelios) and he wants a Lenco TT now!!
(But WTF does he know - he only spends all week flogging the bloody
stuff: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/testing123.mp3 !!)
2) Cloney Toney has got near-identical kit to me now and is stuggling to
get some 'air' and treble from his vinyl side - proof that you can throw
all the ingredients into a tin and whack it in the oven for long enough,
but you won't necessarily bake a nice cake!!
:-)
