That is probably correct. However many of us prefer to display the postings
in other ways. e.g. I display by group, then thread title, and then date of
posting, in order to be able to read discussions in chronological order. I
can display by subject-thread reference ID but I prefer not to have to keep
switching the display scheme.

Quoting is regarded as good nettiquet as it means you do not have to make
assumptions about how the person reading will be displaying the items. It
also reminds people of the specific parts of a previous posting which you
are referring to. One of the purposes of quoting is to use snipped sections
to show what specific points you are discussing. You can't do this if you
just rely on reference ID linking.

Hence you will tend to find people get annoyed if you fail to behave in
accord with what is generally regarded as being considerate and
well-mannered.

The point of posting is that other people shall read what you have to say.
If they find your postings irritating to read, they may either skip them,
or become annoyed. It makes sense in my view to avoid this.

Thus it isn't really a matter of what is possible. It is a matter of
showing consideration if you want people to read what you write. This may
be covered by an RFC, but even if not, it tends to be expected for
reasons which I think are fairly sensible.

Jim
