I am however curious about one thing. We know that Finland has one of
the highest suicide rates in the world, but I wonder if this was true
*before* you moved there........................ :-)

My wife is a sociologist so this suicide rate something we talk
about often. If you do a little more research you will find the
explanation to the problem.

a.  the Finns have a Slavic mentality (they live in the key of
Gb minor - does that mean anything to you?)

b. Although the do not drink any more alcohol than the Germans
or the British, they drink it all at once, often with unfortunate
consequences.

On the positive side, you will find that:

1. Finland has the highest standard of education.

2. Finland also has the highest standard of health care in the EU

3. Finland has the highest standard of social care (no homeless
people living in boxes in shop doorways as in the UK)

4. Finland is also the most industrially competitive nation in the EU.
(shipbuilding, electronics, paper and timber industries)

5. Finland (with Sweden) has the cleanest environment in the EU and
the lowest levels of pollution.

6. Finland covers an area 30%larger than the UK, with only 9% of
the population of the UK, and only 5% of the traffic.  There are
100 000 lakes, and many million trees per head of the population.
That's a lot of clean air:-)

7. Compared with the UK, housing is about 50% cheaper, and of
a much higher standard.

8. There are no fabulously rich people as in the UK, but there are no
illiterates or paupers either.  Most here are fluent in three languages.
I read that many children in the UK struggle to write their own name.

Unlike the UK, the residents of both Finland and Sweden are happy
with their standard of living, their governments and policies.

Can't be too bad, can it?
