Have you considered the possibility that the terminal contacts had worked
loose or become dirty or oxidised over time, so that the simple act of
cutting off the bare copper ends and re-making the contacts would have had
the same effect? I'd suggest that anyone with doubts about the integrity of
their loudspeaker connections should try the cheapest and easiest remedy
first.

Then again, it never ceases to amaze me how the spending of large amounts
of money often seems to intensify the perception of possible changes caused
by whatever the money was spent on, while people other than the one who
spent the money are unable to perceive any change at all.
