Either something was wrong with the former cables or you're
having an ecstatic experience.

Well, that is known to increase gain by 6 dB which is
audible to say the least.

I'm wondering if the unbalanced->balanced change which is
dramatic because it makes things louder is affecting your
perception of the rest.
