North American facing switches/turnouts/points do not have a facing
point lock in the UK sense. i.e. A moving bar that physically locks
the stretcher bar, that bar joining the points together, in either the
left or right hand direction. IIRC, it simply the gearing that holds
the points firmly in place. Think worm gear, a gear that only turns
from the motor end and thus locks itself in place when stopped.

There are some switch machines that only use gearing, but most have a
locking bar that is inserted in a slot in the actuating arm within the
machine. In addition, if a facing point switch is located close to a
level crossing, it might also have point locks to protect it.

You can operate an electric "switch machine" by unlocking the
mechanism with a "switch key" (Padlock) and then cranking the points
over.

North American switches/turnouts/points cannot be trailed through,
even in yards but must be lined for trailing as well as facing moves.

Yards do have what are termed rubber switches, where the points can be
trailed through. They have a different shaped target so crews can
identify them. Most are hand-throw switches, but some are also power
operated.

Keep in mind that for 99% of North America, 60 to 70 MPH is fast and
most main track "switches" in North America, the speed over the
diverging route is usually 25 MPH or less. There are, of course,
exceptions.

Make that 30 mph or less.
