Incidentally, first class on SNCB/NMBS includes wider seats with more
leg room, but no freebies such as food or drink.
And on Netherlands-Belgium international trains includes the possibility
"old fashioned" compartments. I can't remember when I last travelled in
one in the UK (maybe thirty years ago) although I stood in the corridor
in one out of Waterloo in the mid 90's.

I particularly enjoyed the large quantities of screwtop Sauvignon (and
other tipples) dished out by the excellent crews in Leisure Select.
I'm making my first journey inStandardPremiertommorow and will be
interested to see what is on offer.
Let us know, then tellEurostar. There have been a few reports on WNXX
about this - all negative so far - followed up with letters toEurostar. A few more of those should accelerate the inevitableEurostarU-turn...
Well! The price was the same as the old Leisure Select, the (collect
at station) ticket did show the class as "1" and the accommodation was
in one of the former Leisure Select Coaches. At the start of the
journey, when the drinks trolley used to come round, someone came
round with a box of water bottles and gave everybody one. Script:
"Here is your refreshment. We will be serving a light meal in about
ten minutes." The light meal was, as the person dishing it out
perceptively remarked, "Light with a big L". The quality was fine - a
small piece of smoked Salmon with creme fraiche, a small piece of good
quality ham with a small piece of cheese, twelve grapes and a small
square of chocolate. There seemed to be plenty of bread rolls - a
wise move. We were offered a single quarter bottle of red, white or
rose wine, so I got my screwtop Sauvignon, just not much of it. There
was a choice of coffee or tea to finish. To be honest, I might
transfer to standard more often now (I already tend to travel in
standard early in the day because I'm not fussed about breakfast and
don't generally
drink before lunch time).
Coming back, for reasons too complex to bother you with, I was in the
echoing empty spaces of Business Premier coach seven. The offer here
was virtually identical to the old leisure select one. The salad was
slightly superior, with a couple of Parmesan shavings on it, but
otherwise the dishes would have looked completely at home had their
foil lids been whipped off in the old Leisure Select coaches. Copious
screwtop Sauvignon was available (after the initial glass of
Champagne) and I indulged with enthusiasm, and a certain sense of the
last chance saloon.
Personally, I'd rather they put a fiver on the prices and kept the
previous offer.
We shall see!
