Point taken, and there are indeed connections with the main line now south
of the platforms, but from memory these give access from the Leicester
direction to platforms 2-5 rather than from the WCML to platforms 6/7.
I'll look more closely when I'm there next week, ideally in daylight. At
the north end of platforms 6/7 there is and can be no main line
connection, because the platforms are on a steep rising gradient to cross
the WCML using the old Midland Railway viaduct.
I think I read somewhere that the electrification of the new platforms was
to do with allowing loco hauled Pendolinos on diversion (ie from the
Birmingham route) to have the loco detached off the main lines.
