One thing that did strike me is how hopeless the timetable / frequency
is on the Metro. Every 12 minutes is rather poor and the combined 6
min headway (when operated properly) cannot cope with City Centre
flows.

It's approx. 3 min intervals during weekday peak periods. The poor
relation is the east-west route: there is/was an 18-minute gap in St.
James departures at around 17:15 of all times. Many a time I've had to
run between levels at Monument in the evening too - 2 minute
connections in the timetable but trains aren't regulated.

It all seemed to go to pot when the Sunderland extension opened a few
years ago. Before that the services were frequent, regular and reliable.
When it first opened they remained frequent but were irregular and
unreliable. They then rejigged the timetable to make them less frequent
and still irregular, but at least it was more reliable.
