I suspect you're rightish here (and, re the comment downthread on "why
would you put a coach company's name on a premium train service?",
this is probably the exact reason). But I don't see why it'd be
undervalued in the franchising process: if the bidder thinks it'll
make money for the group, then they'll be willing to pay higher premia
than otherwise.

Which, interestingly, makes a franchise like WC or EC worth more to a
large company with a downmarket brand than to either a solo operation
like GNER or an upmarket brand like Virgin...

They don't seem to be in a rush to rebrand C2C, and I'm wondering if
that's because they think their own brand might now tarnish what's
seen as a successful operation.
