I do try not do do this, but I admit it's hard, because I have generally found loco-hauled journeys enjoyable (on the secondary lines I find the most interesting), partly (I believe) because they have been more likely to have enough seats and be comfortable.

I agree it's not just Britain: not long ago I travelled on line in Austria where there peak-time loco-hauled diagram had been replaced by a single 5047 'Hunde-Box' with predictable unpleasant results ....
