From the Herald today:

Key benefits of the scheme, which is set for completion in 2016,
include increasing the frequency of services between Glasgow Queen
Street and Edinburgh to around six an hour each way, with a fastest
journey time of 35 minutes and some slower services with more stops.

The project will involve electrifying the main line between Glasgow
and Edinburgh, including diversionary routes, as well as lines through
Stirling to Dunblane and Alloa."

I suppose this means the final demise of Stirling's semaphore
signals. Hopefully they'll be saved for preservation.

Any details on where the electrified routes will be controlled from -
all from a major signalling centre in Glasgow, presumably?

Fantastic news for Scotland's railways though - who'd ever have
dreamed any of this would even be possible ten years ago!

Hmmm, the 170s thrown "spare" by this should allow 156s or 158s to be
eliminated from Scotland in seven years time.  Perhaps these (along
with surplus 165s/166s from the Thames Valley) will allow Pacers to be
withdrawn?

Why do people keep going on about withdrawing Pacers? We have major
overcrowding problems in several DMU-worked parts of the network, if
spare units become available then they should be coupled together into
longer trains to increase capacity on existing services.

No DMU, Pacer or otherwise, should be withdrawn while there are still
wedged and standing services leaving people behind at stations.

Other interesting bits in the article are:

"Edinburgh Park Station will also be served by Glasgow-to-Edinburgh
services for the first time."

It will be interesting to see how these "stoppers" are fitted in
amongst the non-stop services.

"The first major milestone will involve building the interchange at
Gogar by 2011. It will serve rail services between Edinburgh and
Glasgow, and the capital's new tram network. Network Rail is currently
exhibiting plans for the interchange and is expected to submit a
planning application in October."

Another stop!  I suspect there will be no room for an "all shacks"
service (except early in the morning/late at night) - trains will have
to call at a (varying) selection of stations.

Depends on whether they install any passing loops. In the days of
steam, different types of service could share a line by having the
stoppers looped at intermediate stations while the expresses hammered
through on the fast lines. Not sure if any of the E&G stations could
be easily rebuilt to allow that, but it's certainly a proven method.

Plus, with the accelleration of modern EMUs, it's probably not as much
of a problem as it once was.
