Ignoring tiny tax-haven principalities and islands, the UK has
more people per square mile (640) than any country in Europe, and
indeed the 'Western World', except Belgium and The Netherlands.
So do say: it is third, just before Germany, but first if you take
England alone, i.e. Great Britain without Scotland and Wales.
According to the yearbook 2000 which I have here as my source, the
numbers are these (in people per sqare kilometer):
p/qkm
------------------
1187 Malta
378 England
--------------
376 Netherlands
334 Belgium
243 UKoGBaNI
230 Germany
191 Italy
163 Luxemburg
131 Czech Republic
124 Poland
122 Denmark
110 Slovakia
109 Hungary
108 France
108 Portugal
096 Austria
095 Romania
093 Cyprus (w/o KKTC)
080 Greece
078 Spain
075 Bulgaria
057 Lithuania
052 Ireland (26 counties)
038 Latvia
032 Estonia
019 Sweden
015 Finland
----------------
172 Switzerland
