*Did*... not too sure it's doing that at the moment, as Advance fare
availability is restricted and prices are raised. But then again,
travelling around the country on leisure is arguably less of a
priority, esp. if someone has no money. That said, it's good for
people to keep in touch with friends and family and also get out a bit
if they can, as it helps to keeps things in perspective.
Not sure that's generally true (for quota * price, rather than for
absolute minimum price).
NXEC have been quite bad at advance fares, but EMT seem cheaper than
anything I ever managed to extract from MML (and actually GNER were
quite crap at advance tix, most of my travel with them was on
Weekenders), and Virgin's still very cheap on advance.
Agreed that the availability of very cheap tickets on non-packed
trains is a good thing, both for the railway and the country at large.
You're quite right. My comments were basically made in light of what
seems to have happened on NXEC, whom seem to be offering fewer of the
really cheapo Advance tickets these days, and who are also offering
more expensive Advance fares that are not much cheaper than the walk-
up fares presumably as an attempt to keep hold of all the loot (minus
sales commission) rather than having to share it out via ORCATS. As
you say, other TOCs seem to be taking a different approach (with
Virgin not least because they've got so much extra capacity on parts
of the WCML with the VHF timetable).
