There were of course others from LM via Reading and Eastleigh; there
used to be some from WR Thames Valley - including to Swanage - but WR
London Division to SR coast seems to have dropped off by mid 1970s. At
least thats how I recall it.

The Merrymakers were great for those of us trainspotters on a tight
budget. I recall one that picked up all stations from Knutsford to Old
Trafford and went on to Reading - quite why they thought that
destination would appeal to the general public i don't know but for a
Manchester area spotter it gave us rare access to the exotic GW main
line and WR engines. I recall it was class 40 hauled along the
normally exclusively EMU operated Altrincham line before a change to a
class 85 at Piccadilly or Stockport before changing again at Coventry
to a class 25 for a trash to Reading. Great stuff. Other destinations
were Torquay, Edinburgh and Bournemouth. There was always a great
atmoshere on board the mk I train with everyone tucking into packed
lunches as there was no catering at all. Great memories overall. I
recall one excursion where on the return leg there were no lights
working along the whole train which gave for a very eerie and
atmospheric journey. Paul
